Iron Deficiency Recipe

I'm sharing this iron tonic recipe that I've used quite a few times over the last few years.  I've used it particularly during pregnancy when my iron levels were very low and its symptoms began to show.  Please research this herb yourself, so that you can become familiar with it before utilizing it. 

The recipe is taken from Susun Weed's book, Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.




Iron Tonic Recipe

2 ounces of dried Yellow Dock roots
4 tablespoons of honey (I prefer Agave Nectar)
2 tablespoons of brandy (optional)

Put the roots into a quart jar, fill completely with boiling water, cap well.  Infuse for eight hours or overnight.  Strain plant material out and discard.  Steam liquid over a very low flame until it is reduced to one cup.  DO NOT BOIL OR SIMMER.  Add honey and stir it until it dissolves.  Turn up fire and bring mixture just to the boil.  Pour boiling hot into a very clean jar.  Add brandy, if desired.  Cap. Cool. Then store your tonic in the refrigerator.

Yellow Dock roots concentrate iron from the eath and offer it to us combined with the minerals and vitamins needed for the best absorption in our bodies.  Rises in the hematocrit (a measure of iron) of as much as a point a week are reported by women taking this iron tonic during pregnancy and after a hemorrhage. 

The dose is one or two tablespoons daily.  (Please only consume recommended dosage.)

*On a side note, I must add that my babies have experienced gasiness if I've taken this herb while breastfeeding.  This is also a VERY strong purgitive herb and can be a bit tough on their tummies.  I've supplemented with nettle leaf, liquid chlorophyll, dandelion roots and  dandelion greens to increase my iron while breastfeeding.
